A Schoolchild’s letter
In Dolpo there is no reliable post service, therefore we (Franziska Dörig, Marietta Kind, Urs Furger, Alexandra Rozkosny) often had the task to deliver letters and messages to friends and family during our travels from one village to another. One of the letters we delivered was written by a girl from Tapriza Culture School to her best friend, who unluckily could not join the school, as she was needed to work in her family's fields. In October it was harvest time and the work in the fields was especially hard.
We took the liberty to show the contents of the letter on this website in a translation from Nepali by one of our teachers.

Please! Dear bird, take this letter as fast as the wind, hoping to get a reply soon!

Date: 2057-6-2 [Nepali calendar - in October 2000]
Time: Evening 5 o'clock
Place: room - alone
Remembrance: only you my friend
Weather: cloudy

Dear Friend,

Namaskar! With lots of remembrance. Up to date I am fine and praying to kind Tapriza for your good health. My love and remembrance towards you is deeper than Phoksumdo lake, higher than Mt. Everest, hotter than fire, brighter than sun, shinier than stars in the sky, sweeter than sugar and tastier than apples. My Friend you are facing difficult times doing hard work on the field, with the animals and around the house. You must work hard in order to forget these difficulties. Without working we are not able to get our daily food. Don't regret while you are working. Your parents stopped you from getting an education. Without education we have to do hard work. So I would like to be an educated woman by learning more and more new things. I feel like I am talking alone in my room because you are far away from me. Anyhow we will meet some day in some place. Now I will stop to write on white paper with blue ink. Please, reply as soon as possible. We will always keep in touch by letters. If we are alive, we will meet after one or two weeks. Please say hello and sweet remembrance to Karchung.

Your friend
