Aims
|
|
|
The aim of the
project is to support the Tibetan-speaking population in Dolpo,
Nepal in establishing a locally managed school for cultural
preservation. Subjects include Tibetan language, history, culture,
and religion in addition to standard Nepalese education. Local
traditions of Dolpo are given special attention.
Parts of the
population in Dolpo District are followers of the ancient Bon
religion, in the local language called Bonpo. Until now,
no school in the whole region suited the needs of this minority
tradition. They are no longer isolated as they used to be for
centuries. Political changes and the pressure of the culturally
different and dominant mainstream Nepal as well as foreign tourists
have the effect that young people are quickly losing their own
language and traditional heritage. Bonpo leaders are keenly
interested in preserving their culture while at the same time
providing an education and opportunities for their children. The
locally initiated school is focusing on the Bonpo community, but is
open to children of the region regardless of their religious
background.
