Trekking in Dolpo

There is a large selection of agencies offering treks in Dolpo. For those who want to travel more affordably, can manage in English, and are willing to embrace the "Nepali Style" a bit, we recommend agencies from Dolpo. This also provides employment for locally managed trekking agencies, their guides, and staff, and can offer a direct insight into the local culture. For those who prefer to communicate in German and benefit from Swiss service, we recommend agencies that offer excellent packages and, depending on the trip, also facilitate a visit to the Tapriza School.

Nepal

We recommend trekking agencies with connections to Dolpo. The owners or guides and crew are from Dolpo and some are even former students or staff:

  • Destination Dolpo is the trekking agency founded by our principal Semduk Lama to enable former students to work locally as trekking guides or staff. Thanks to the agency, visits by sponsors to the Tapriza School can also be organized more easily.
  • Dolpo Caravan Treks is managed by our former Tapriza student Norbu Lama from Sepka in Dolpo. He has also gained experience dealing with Western tourists in mountain huts in the Austrian Alps.
  • Explore Dolpo Trekking is run by Jitendra Jhankri. He himself comes from Dunai in Dolpo. A large part of the guides and employees are from Dolpo.

Switzerland and Austria

In Switzerland, we can recommend the following providers for Dolpo treks, with whom we have already collaborated:

  • BergFrau GmbH offers trekking and hiking in Dolpo and worldwide. BergFrau Claudia Schmid visits the Tapriza School on her treks and supports Tapriza's health projects with her collections.
  • Tibet Culture Trekking Tours offer various trips in the Himalayas and usually visit the Tapriza School on their treks to Dolpo.

Based in Austria, the following provider is recommended:

  • Cultures Connect organizes trips to Nepal (Mustang, Kathmandu Valley, Gosainkunda), India (Ladakh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala), and Bhutan. They are accompanied by the anthropologist Dr. Gabriele Tautscher in cooperation with local specialists, agencies, and curators. Gabriele Tautscher has many years of experience as an anthropologist and tour guide. With her as a companion, exciting insights into local cultures, religion, architecture, and medicine become possible.
